Your Ink Kulture tattoo is printed in semi-permanent genipin ink — a plant-based ink that develops in the top layer of your skin instead of sitting on top of it. That is why it looks faint at first, darkens overnight, and then stays put for 1–2 weeks. Ten careful minutes at the start decide how sharp it looks all week.
What you need
- Your tattoo sheet
- Soap and water
- A sponge or cloth, damp but not dripping
- Scissors, if your sheet holds more than one design
- One hour when you can leave the area completely alone
Pick the right spot
Works best: forearm, inner arm, upper arm, shoulder, collarbone, ribs, back, calf, thigh — flat, dry skin that does not rub against clothing all day.
Avoid: palms and soles, fingers, and skin that creases over knuckles, elbows and knees. Also avoid the face, eyelids and lips, broken or sunburnt skin, and skin you have shaved or waxed in the last 24 hours.
If the area is hairy, shave it and wait a couple of hours before applying.
Apply it
- Clean the skin. Wash with soap, rinse, and pat completely dry. No lotion, oil, sunscreen or perfume — the ink will not take over any of them.
- Cut it out. Trim close around the design, then peel the clear protective film off the printed side.
- Place it ink side down. Press it flat against your skin. Once it is down, do not slide or reposition it.
- Wet the backing paper. Hold the damp sponge against the paper and press for 45–60 seconds, until the whole sheet is saturated and darkened. Press and hold — do not rub.
- Peel it off slowly. Lift one corner to check. If the design has not transferred, lay it back down and wet it for another 15 seconds. Then peel in one steady pull.
- Let it air dry for one hour. It will look pale, greenish and disappointing. That is exactly right. Do not touch it, wash it, or cover it with clothing.
- Rinse. After the hour, rinse with cool water only — no soap, no scrubbing — and pat dry with a soft towel.
Then wait. The ink darkens on its own
| Time after applying | What you will see |
|---|---|
| 0–1 hour | A faint, pale outline |
| 2–12 hours | Colour starts coming up, still light |
| 24 hours | Deep blue-black, close to final |
| 36–48 hours | Fully developed — as dark as it will get |
Do not judge it, scrub it or redo it before 24 hours. Washing off a tattoo that looked too light at hour two is the single most common mistake.
For the first 24 hours, skip hot showers and steam, swimming, heavy sweating at the gym, moisturiser or oil on the area, and tight straps or waistbands sitting over it.
Make it last
A well-applied tattoo holds at full strength for about 5–7 days and fades out by day 10–14. To get the long end of that:
- After the first 24 hours, moisturise the area daily. Dry skin flakes off faster and takes the design with it.
- Pat dry after a shower instead of rubbing.
- Keep scrubs, loofahs, exfoliating acids and retinol off the spot.
- Long soaks, pools and heavy oils fade it fastest.
- In humid weather, sweat and friction are the real enemies. Loose clothing over the area helps more than anything else.
Hands, feet and inner forearms shed skin quickly, so expect a shorter life there.
Want it off sooner?
Soak the area in warm water, then exfoliate with a loofah or a sugar scrub. Repeat over a couple of days and it will lift. Never use bleach, acetone or other solvents on your skin.
If something goes wrong
It came out patchy
The skin was not fully clean and dry, or the backing paper was not evenly wetted. Wait the full 24 hours first — patches often fill in as it develops. After that you can apply a second piece over a gap.
It smudged
Something touched it before it dried. Within the first hour you can wash it off with warm water and a scrub and start fresh.
It is still light after 24 hours
Usually very dry skin, or a high-friction spot. It will not darken further after 48 hours — try a different area next time and moisturise the day before.
The edges look blurry
Too much water, or rubbing while wetting. Press and hold next time, and use a sponge that is damp rather than soaked.
Safety
- Genipin is derived from the genipap fruit. This is not a needle tattoo, and it is not black henna — there is no PPD in it.
- Sensitive skin? Patch test first. Apply a small offcut to your inner arm and wait 24 hours.
- Do not apply to broken, irritated, sunburnt or freshly shaved skin, and keep it away from eyes and lips.
- Children should apply it only with adult supervision.
- If you notice redness, itching or burning, wash the area with soap and water and stop using it. See a doctor if it does not settle.
- If you have a skin condition or a known allergy to plant dyes, check with your doctor before applying.
Common questions
Will it look as dark as the photo?
Yes, once it is fully developed at 48 hours. Genipin develops to a deep blue-black rather than a flat ink black, which is what gives it a real-tattoo look.
Can I shower?
Yes, after the first rinse. Keep showers short and warm rather than hot for the first 24 hours.
Can I swim?
Wait 48 hours. Chlorine and salt water will fade it faster after that.
Can I apply two designs together?
Yes — place them side by side with a small gap, and apply one at a time.
Will it show over an existing tattoo?
Not well over dark ink. Choose bare skin.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. No needles, nothing to heal.
